Is your driveway looking tired, cracked or uneven, or are you starting from scratch on a brand new build? Either way, you have come to the right place. CW Stanley is a family run surfacing company that has been laying quality tarmac driveways in Dorset since 1956, and we design and install hard wearing, great looking surfaces for homes right across the county.
From the first measurement to the final edging, our experienced team takes care of everything, giving you a smooth, durable driveway built to last. Whether you want a single private drive resurfaced or a larger area laid from the ground up, we are the trusted local tarmac contractors homeowners here turn to. We have spent decades in the surfacing industry and have become known for quality surfaces, a reliable team and straightforward pricing. If you are thinking about a new drive, call 01202 602116 and we can discuss what you need.
Why Driveways Fail, and How We Stop It Happening
Almost every driveway that fails early fails for the same reason, and it has nothing to do with the surface you can see.
Water gets past the top layer and reaches the base underneath. Once it does, the compacted stone that carries the weight of your vehicles starts to move, and the surface follows. Cracks appear, then depressions, then potholes. Patching the top does nothing, because the problem was never the top.
That is why we spend most of our effort on the parts you will never look at: the depth of the dig, how thoroughly the sub base is compacted, and whether the falls actually move water off the drive. Get those right and a tarmac driveway will still be flat and sound in twenty years.
Nearly 70 Years of Laying Drives Across Dorset Soil
Established in 1956, we have spent decades learning how driveways behave across this county’s mix of soils, slopes and weather. Ground near the coast does not behave like ground further inland, and a drive on a slope needs a different approach to one on the flat. That knowledge only comes from doing it here, repeatedly, for a long time.
As a genuinely family run business, we answer to our customers rather than a head office, which means honest advice and a finish we are happy to put our name to.
- Nearly 70 years’ experience as surfacing specialists
- Family run and local, so you deal with the people who do the work
- Quality materials and proper groundworks on every project
- Free, no obligation quotes with all costs explained upfront
Prefer proof first? Take a look at our customer reviews and our before and after gallery.
Before you commit to digging the whole thing up, you may not need to. Where the base underneath is still sound, resurfacing brings a worn or cracked drive back without the cost and disruption of a full rebuild. Where the base has already failed, resurfacing only hides the problem for a season. We will tell you which one you are looking at, even when it is the cheaper answer. Call 01202 602116.
The Tarmac Contractors Who Do Their Own Groundworks
A lot of firms quote for a driveway and then hand the groundwork to somebody else. We do not.
Our own installers handle the full job: excavation, sub base, drainage, laying and edging. That means one accountable team from start to finish, one number to ring, and nobody blaming the previous crew when something is not right.
Whether you need a tired surface lifted and replaced, an old drive resurfaced, or a completely new driveway installed from scratch, the same people see it through. Our team has years of practical experience with tarmac and tarmacadam, from compact private drives through to large sweeping driveways and estate roads.
We are also here afterwards. If anything ever goes wrong, get in touch and we will come and put it right. That ongoing support is a large part of why people here keep using us. Where the existing base is still sound, we also offer driveway resurfacing across the county.
What Tarmacadam Actually Is, and Why It Works
Tarmacadam, usually shortened to tarmac, is crushed stone aggregate bound together with bitumen. The aggregate carries the structural load and the bitumen holds it all in place.
That combination is why it resists rutting under repeated vehicle weight. It belongs to the same family of materials used to surface roads, which tells you most of what you need to know about how it handles a car, a van, or a delivery lorry twice a week.
We also offer stone mastic asphalt, which carries a higher binder content and holds its appearance longer, and gravel dressed tarmacadam for a more decorative finish.
What Moves the Price of a New Driveway
Four things, more than anything else.
The size of the area. The condition of what is already there. How much excavation and drainage work the ground actually needs. And whether you want kerbing or a decorative edge. A clean rectangle on solid ground and a sloping drive with a failed base and a water problem are not the same job, and pricing them as though they were helps nobody.
Anyone giving you a figure over the phone is guessing. We come out, look at the ground properly, and put it in writing with everything explained upfront. If you are comparing areas, see our guides on tarmac driveway costs in Bournemouth and Dorchester.
Four Stages, and the Three That Decide How Long It Lasts
Stage one: excavation. We take accurate measurements, then dig out any existing surface and excavate the subgrade to the depth the ground requires.
Stage two: the sub base. Compacted stone goes in and is rolled until solid. This layer carries the weight of every vehicle and spreads it across the ground beneath. It is the single biggest factor in how long your drive survives, and the easiest one to cut corners on.
Stage three: drainage and falls. We build in a deliberate slope so surface water runs off rather than standing. Standing water seeps into any hairline crack, freezes overnight, expands and widens it. Two winters of that and water has reached the base.
Stage four: the surfacing. A binder course spreads the load, then a wearing course forms the finished surface, each rolled while hot so the aggregate locks together. We finish the edges with kerbing or edging so the material cannot spread sideways under traffic.
Only the fourth stage is visible when we leave. The first three are what you are actually paying for.
Where Tarmac Beats Block Paving and Resin, and Where It Does Not
Tarmac wins on three things: it handles weight without rutting, it has no joints for weeds to push through, and it covers a large area for considerably less than the alternatives. On a wide or irregular drive that cost difference becomes significant.
It does not win on appearance. Block paving gives you pattern, colour and the ability to lift and replace a single damaged unit. Resin gives you a smoother, more contemporary finish and drains through rather than running off, which matters if your drive falls towards the road.
We install all three, so the recommendation is not tied to one material. If you tell us about your property and your budget, we will tell you honestly which suits it.
Tarmac Is Not Always the Answer. Here Is What Else We Lay
If you are considering alternatives, take a look at our resin bound driveways and patios. They offer a modern, low maintenance finish that lets water drain straight through. Whatever surface you have in mind, our clients can rely on us for:
- Resin driveways
- Permeable paving and surfacing
- Commercial surfacing
- Block paving
- Patios
- Tarmac driveways in Bournemouth
Resin: Permeable and Fully Customisable
Resin is popular for its customisability, available in a wide range of coloured aggregates that combine for a unique finish. It is strong, durable and permeable, so water drains through rather than running off. Explore our resin bound driveways and patios for a smooth, contemporary look.
Permeable Paving for Drainage and Planning
Permeable paving lets water drain through and soak back into the ground below. It is environmentally friendly, helps with groundwater replenishment, and keeps your surface free from flooding and puddles. It is also the sensible choice where a drive would otherwise drain towards the highway, which is worth knowing before you apply for anything. See our permeable surfacing options.
Car Parks and Commercial Sites
If your commercial property needs a car park, a public walkway or another surface resurfaced, we can help. Our commercial surfacing and car park resurfacing teams repair and maintain a wide range of surfaces, working in phases where a site needs to stay open.
Block Paving: Replace One Block, Not the Lot
Block paving is highly customisable, made up of individual pavers in many colours, sizes and shapes. It is strong and durable, and if a block is ever damaged it lifts out and gets replaced individually rather than patching a whole area. See our full range of block paving driveways.
Patios in Porcelain, Sandstone and Natural Stone
Many homeowners want a patio for relaxing or entertaining. We design and install quality patios using porcelain paving, sandstone, natural stone, block paving and resin bound stone.
Resurfacing and Repairs
Where the sub base is sound and only the surface has worn, resurfacing restores the drive for considerably less than a rebuild. Isolated potholes, cracking and crumbling edges can often be handled as a straightforward repair. Where the base has sunk or is holding water, the failure is structural and resurfacing will only mask it, so we assess what is underneath before recommending either.
How Long a Tarmac Driveway Lasts
A properly installed tarmac drive will generally give you between 15 and 25 years. That figure depends far more on the depth and compaction of the sub base than on the surface itself, which is exactly why we do not rush the groundwork.
Looking After It Afterwards
Tarmac asks very little of you. An occasional sweep, keeping the edges clear of moss and weed growth, and dealing with small cracks before water finds them is realistically the whole job. Catching minor damage early is what stops it becoming structural.
See Finished Driveways Near You
We know clients like to see real work before committing to their own drive, which is why we keep an online tarmac driveway gallery showcasing completed projects across the county.
The Difference a New Surface Makes
If you want to see just how much changes, our before and after page shows how we have transformed previous clients’ homes from worn, tired drives into smart, durable surfaces.
What Homeowners Say
As well as seeing the workmanship, many people want to hear from previous customers. Our testimonials and reviews pages carry feedback from people we have worked with.
